Department Office Location and Phone Number: Room 108, N8 Building (Tel:821-1245,1852)

Department Overview and Objectives

The Department of Materials Engineering of HBNU Graduate School of Industry was established in October 1995 to foster competent human resources for research and development (R&D) in the field of advanced components and materials, which are strategic industries in the region. From 1997, the department conducted basic research and company-supported research with advanced facilities such as semiconductor clean rooms as part of the University for Creative Korea (CK) project for five years. Since 2004, the department has been conducting applied research in conjunction with companies as a chemical department of the first and second phase of the National Center of Excellence in Industry-University Cooperation Project. Meanwhile, in 2007, the department was selected for the Regional Innovative Industry Infrastructure Construction Project supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and established the Process and Evaluation Research Center for Information and Electronic Components, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as AFM and XPS. As a result, the department has been contributing significantly to the development of local industries by providing technical support through joint research with local companies as well as highly skilled technical manpower.

Focuses of Education and Research

New metals play a pivotal role in industrial development of modern times, and the department conducts education and research in the fields of new materials such as semiconductors and fine ceramics as well as nano devices and solar cells, which are expected to have massive markets in the future. The department also provides excellent human resources to companies and research institutes by cultivating R&D capabilities through research in connection with research institutes in Daedeok Innopolis such as the Nano Fab Center.

Applications and Related Industries

The field of new materials will be the most fundamental and essential field for securing national competitiveness in the 21st century. Therefore, graduates from the department will be able to find career opportunities at leading companies and national research institutes in the fields of renewable energy, semiconductors, displays, and advanced components and materials, or pursue doctoral degrees at domestic or foreign universities.

The Nature of the Discipline and Its Prospects

With the advent of the information age in the 21st century, the industrial paradigm has changed, requiring the cultivation of creative and highly skilled and educated human resources based on new knowledge. This means the cultivation of human resources who can overcome the limitations of standardized and formalized education, technology, and manpower in the mass production society and adapt, transform, and develop new industrial paradigms, which will be the core foundation of the competitiveness of nations and societies in the future. Therefore, our department strives to nurture excellent engineers with adaptability, creativity, and international thinking who can play a pivotal role in the design, development, and production of advanced material components necessary to realize a ubiquitous society in the 21st century.
