Department Office Location and Phone Number: Room 526, S8 Building (Ext. 821-1843,1186)

Department Overview and Objectives

The department aims to foster urban engineering experts with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to solve various problems in modern cities with rational solutions and contribute to the creation of sustainable urban spaces, efficient maintenance and management of urban infrastructure. To this end, students are provided with overall academic knowledge of urban engineering in their major such as urban planning, urban design, urban transportation, and urban environment and taught practical application techniques.

Focuses of Education and Research

  • To understand the techniques for sustainable development of cities by learning about urban design and planning measures to maximize the utilization and maintenance of existing infrastructure for the growth and management of cities and to solve urban issues
  • To develop academic and experimental capabilities to effectively deal with and solve the serious urban transportation challenges faced by modern cities
  • To cultivate the ability to not only respond to the current urban environment issues, but also to create a pleasant and livable urban environment in the future by applying engineering techniques to the growing issues of the urban environment

Applications and Related Industries

Urban engineering is the study of the overall system that moves and drives society. Urban environments will display increasing complexity in the future due to economic growth, social diversification, and technological advancement. As a result, demand for urban engineers will rise, and they will be presented with various career opportunities (public institutions, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, Korea Expressway Corporation, urban and transportation engineering agencies/companies, design planning firms, planning department of private companies, public spatial planning fields, and research institutes in related fields).

The Nature of the Discipline and Its Prospects

The Department of Urban Engineering is characterized by the fact that it not only trains experts in the fields of urban planning, design, transportation, and environment, but also equips students the ability to logically analyze and rationally plan urban spaces and urban residents’ activities based on technologies that integrated the three areas as well as smart technologies. In the future, the Department of Urban Engineering will offer curricula that consider these aspects in an integrated manner to progressively advance as a leading department in the field of urban and regional planning.
