The majors offered by the Department of Japanese Language include Japanese Language, Japanese Language Education, Japanese Literature, Japanese Studies, and Translation and Interpretation, where students can learn academic theories and their applications in depth. The objective of the Department of Japanese Language is to contribute to national, regional, and individual development by cultivating excellent experts on Japan and the Japanese language. To this end, the department strives to achieve excellent curricula and faculty members to help students achieve their academic goals and pursuits.
The purpose of the Master of Arts in Japanese Language program is to help students develop an understanding of the discipline and cultivate their expertise through the study of Japanese language and literature. Japanese language studies concern a study of the linguistic characteristics of Japanese, such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, as an individual language through diachronic and synchronic studies, while Japanese literature studies involve a study of the identity of Japan, Japanese people, or Japanese culture through various Japanese literary works across genres and time periods.
Graduates can pursue careers as academics, diplomats, writers, media organizations, general business owners, interpreters, foreign affairs officials, journalists for newspapers and broadcasting agencies, publishers and editors, researchers, etc. They may also pursue further education by studying in Japan. Especially with Japan’s economic growth, the prospects for entering the corporate world are very bright.
