Welcome to the HBNU Village

By Lee Seo-jin Reporter, Junior of Material Science and Engineering

As adults, many students who attend college leave their family homes. They move to dormitories, stay in lodgings, or live alone in studio apartments. So, where do the students of HBNU live?

There are four main accommodations where students can live alone in studio apartments at HBNU: In front of the main gate, in front of the south gate, next to the dormitory, and behind Lotteria. I wanted to find out about each accommodation, so I have interviewed students who are living in each of those locations.

In front of the main gate: This location is close to the engineering building. It is convenient because there are bus stops, restaurants, and general stores which are all located nearby.

  < Jo Tae-yeon, Senior of Economics>

Q. How much is your rent bill? (monthly/deposit)

  1.  350,000₩/2,000,000₩

Q. Why did you start living alone?

  1. There was not enough room in the HBNU dormitory.

Q. Why did you choose your studio apartment?

  1. Because my room was located on a high floor, and each space was separated by a door.

Q. What is a bad thing about living near HBNU?

  1. The delivery food menu is restricted and the tips are expensive.

Q. What is a good thing about living near HBNU?:

  1. This location is quiet.

In front of the south gate: This location is near the Dept. of Building & Engineering building. Also, it is close to the bus stop for bus numbers 113 and 117.

< Jeong Hyo-bin, Senior of Chemical and Biological Engineering >

Q. How much is your rent bill?

  1. 4.5 million won (2 years deposit)

Q. Why did you start living alone?

  1. Because commuting from home to school was uncomfortable.

Q. Why did you choose your studio apartment?

  1. Because I found a house where I could sign a lease, and that reduced the cost.

Q. What is a bad thing about living near HBNU?

  1. The number of restaurants is limited around here.

Q. What is a good thing about living near HBNU?

  1. I can reduce my commuting time.

Next to the dormitory: This location is relatively far from school, but quiet and cheaper than in front of the south gate or behind Lotteria.

< Gi Myeong-seok, 2020 Graduates Japanese >

Q. How much is your rent bill? (monthly/deposit)

  1. 300,000₩ /2,000,000₩

Q. Why did you start living alone?

  1. I wanted to reduce my commuting time. If I had lived in a dormitory, I would have to stay with others. There would have been certain drawbacks to living with others.  However when living alone, there is not that kind of  inconvenience.

Q. Why did you choose your studio apartment?

  1. The distance between HBNU and home is very important when choosing a room, but I think that the location, the amount of sunlight, and the view is more of a priority.

Q. What is a bad thing about living near HBNU?

  1. There are few amenities around the school, such as banks and drugstores. Although there are more restaurants nearby than before, I think other facilities are still lacking.

Q. What is a good thing about living near HBNU?

  1. There are many convenience stores.

Behind Lotteria: This location is quiet with lots of sunlight. It is close to the Engineering buildings.

 <Shin myeong-hwa, Sophomore of Electronics Control Engineering>

Q. How much is your rent bill? (monthly/deposit)

  1. 450,000₩ / 3,000,000₩

Q. Why did you start living alone?

  1. The main reason is that there was not enough room at the HBNU dormitory. But, I always wanted to live on my own when I became a college student.

Q. Why did you choose your studio apartment?

  1. This place is large and quiet.

Q. What is a bad thing about living near HBNU?

  1. The recycling facilities are poor, so there is too much trash on the streets. I think it is important to make a clean environment.

Q. What is a good thing about living near HBNU?

  1. The biggest advantage is that it is close to school, and that I can meet my friends often because they also live near HBNU.

Q. Do you have any tips for choosing your room?

Hyo-bin: You need to check the walls. If the walls are thin, the noise will pass through to your room. If you do not check,  I am sure it will stress you out!

Myeong-seok: When choosing a room, I recommend going to a real estate and looking at many rooms. Nowadays, you can check different places through an app, but there are a lot of differences between the website photos and actually going there. Check in advance. Is it soundproof? Or is it sunny when the window is opened? Or is it possible to recycle? Or is the size of the refrigerator ok? Another tip! If you have not been to a real estate yet, it will be better to go there with your parents. You are more likely to find a good studio apartment.  Also, good rooms tend to be let out quickly, so it is better to sign a contract in advance during the vacation.

Q. Is there anything you want to say to people who want to live alone?

Tae-yeon: Eat healthy. You should not skip your meals just because cooking is annoying. This will add hospital bills besides living expenses. People who live alone should eat well and take a walk around the neighborhood for exercise.

Myeong-hwa: I think our lifestyle depends on what you do. If you do not cook or care for your house, you will not enjoy living on your own. However, if you decorate and tidy your house, you will be satisfied with your own space.

Interviews with students living alone around HBNU showed that they thought there were not enough facilities available. So, how much difference is there, compared with Chungnam National University(CNU), another national university in Daejeon? I have activated a delivery app that can actually compare the number of restaurants.

Comparison of studio apartment near HBNU and Chungnam National University

HBNU

CNU

Rent bill

Nearby commercial areas

Compared to CNU’s commercial district, the area around HBNU is not very developed. Nevertheless, the monthly rent for studio apartments near CNU and HBHU are a similar price. I compared the monthly rents using Naver real estate. Near CNU, normal studio apartments have prices ranging from around 200,000 to 350,000 won. Some studio apartments that were sold near HBNU were a similar price to those near CNU, but HBNU’s studio apartments were generally more expensive. There are many things to consider when comparing monthly rent costs, but it is not reasonable to pay similar prices compared to more commercial districts. This is something you should certainly think about when you are trying to live at HBNU’s studio apartments.

Living alone near HBNU has the definite advantage of reducing commuting time. In addition, as many new apartments have been built around here, there is a high possibility of development as the commercial area is growing. Living alone around HBNU has another unique advantage. There is Sutong-ri next to Gyeryongsan National Park, which has many good and healthy restaurants. You can hike as a hobby, and you can enjoy the fresh air to the fullest.

There will be many students who are not independent because they have non-face-to-face classes due to COVID-19. After the pandemic, why do not you use this information to choose your own room?
