SW-Centric University

By Lee Seong-ji Reporter, Junior of Artificial Intelligence Software

The SW-centric university is a government-funded program that aims to foster software talents needed in the field by strengthening education and providing various benefits. HBNU has been selected for the SW-centric university project, receiving hundreds of billions of won in government support and enjoying many benefits related to software. Let's take a look at the benefits of a SW-centric university.

  1. SW Contest

SW contest consists of a joint hackathon and a joint AI contest. The joint hackathon is a competition held through teams randomly composed of students from the universities selected as SW-centric universities, and each team implements an app, service, or library using open source. Up to four people are selected from each university, and the grand prize winner receives a cash prize of 3 million won. The joint AI contest is a competition in which participants solve problems using artificial intelligence according to the competition topic. Unlike the joint hackathon, it mainly uses artificial intelligence, and teams are formed in advance to participate in the competition.

  1. SW Volunteers Corps

The SW Volunteer Corps accepts applicants every December, and they are selected through document submissions and interviews. Selected SW volunteers work with their team members to provide IT-related education at elementary and middle schools. In particular, HBNU students can volunteer at schools near Daejeon, so there is no distance burden. Morever, we use tools such as Arduino and Scratch to teach children coding, which are tools that young students can use to access and learn software for the first time. It is a rewarding opportunity to teach children coding while also receiving a fee of 25,000 won per hour.

  1. SW Newly Established Departments

If a university is selected as a SW-centric university, it can establish new departments related to software. The establishment of advanced software-related departments, as well as the possibility of changing the curriculum of existing departments related to software, is possible. HBNU has four major departments under the support of the SW-centric university: the Department of Artificial Intelligence Software, the Department of Computer Engineering, the Department of Mobile Convergence Engineering, and the Department of Intelligent Media Engineering. Computer Engineering covers not only software but also hardware and various aspects related to computers. Mobile Convergence Engineering deals with mobile communication and the Internet of Things, where students can learn about software-related knowledge in communication between electronic devices. Both Artificial Intelligence Software and Intelligent Media Engineering are departments that deal with artificial intelligence. However, the former focuses on the implementation of artificial intelligence itself, while the latter encompasses design and content production utilizing artificial intelligence. For students interested in software, choosing a department supported by an SW-centric university for their major or considering a double major or changing of major could be a good option.

  1. SW Mileage

The benefits of a SW-centric university also include the SW Mileage system. There are four ways to earn SW Mileage. First, taking a major course related to software, second, participating in a SW contest, third, meeting a certain level of software-related certification exam, and finally, participating in a software-related academic conference. The accumulated mileage is worth 1,000 won in cash per point and can be paid in the form of a scholarship. Scholarships can be awarded starting from a minimum of 100 points in mileage.

In this way, a SW-centric university provides abundant support and opportunities for students to engage in software-related activities. Students can make diverse and numerous connections, while participating in software activities and help each other. Furthermore, as gaining economic benefits, students should proudly consider their selection as a SW-centric university and actively participate in software-related activities to take advantage of the opportunities presented.
